The sun god is worshipped with
sweets, devotion and khichdi. In the Hindu epic Mahabharata, it was
noted that King Bhishma was given the boon of choosing his own time and
day of death. He waited for Makar Sankranti to ask for death to come.
Uttarayan announces the onset of spring and the harvest season. It falls on the same day every
year according to the Gregorian calendar. Unlike many cultural
festivals which move around on the calendar each year, Makar Sankrati is
always celebrated on January 15th with a few exceptions where it is on the 13th. 2. It falls on the solstice so the day and night are the same length.
Makara/Makar Sankranti or Uttarayan or Maghi or simply Sankranti, also known in West Bengal as Mokor Sonkranti, and in Nepal as Maghe Sankranti,
'Sankranti' here means ‘transfer’, this day is considered as the
transition day of Sun into Capricorn. Now the sun moves northwards in
the Hindu calendar, dedicated to the deity Surya
(sun), many native multi-day festivals are organised all over India. It
is observed each year the day Sun enters the Capricorn zodiac which
corresponds with the month of January as per the Gregorian calendar. It marks the first day of the sun's transit into Makara rashi.
