Vesak is one of the most important Buddhist festivals. It is also known as Wesak or Buddha Day. It is a celebration of Buddha's birthday and, for some Buddhists, marks his enlightenment (when he discovered life's meaning). It is also a time to reflect on his teachings and what it means to be Buddhist.
The name Vesak is derived
from the Pali term vesākha or Sanskrit vaiśākha for the lunar month of
Vaisakha, which is considered the month of Buddha's birth. In Mahayana Buddhist traditions, the holiday is known by its Sanskrit name (Vaiśākha) and derived variants of it.
Festivities for Vesak Day begin at the crack of dawn in Singapore, as devout Buddhists congregate at temples for a ceremony.
This is when the Buddhist flag is hoisted, and hymns are sung in praise
of the Buddha, the Dharma (his teachings), and the Sangha (his
disciples).
